Abstract

This article aims to analyze Ibn Taymiyyah’s economic thought regarding market mechanisms, fair prices and profits, price regulation, the function of money, monetary policy, the role of the state, and the hisbah institution. Examining these ideas is significant because they demonstrate the interconnection between economic freedom, the value of justice, moral responsibility, and the protection of public interests.

This study employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. Data were obtained from primary sources—specifically the works of Ibn Taymiyyah, notably Majmu’ Fatawa Shaykh al-Islam and Al-Hisbah fi al-Islam—as well as secondary sources such as books and scholarly literature on the history of Islamic economic thought. Data were collected through documentation techniques and subsequently analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method.

The study results indicate that Ibn Taymiyyah viewed prices as the outcome of the interaction between supply and demand, provided that market mechanisms operate honestly and fairly. Government intervention in price setting is permissible in cases of monopoly, hoarding, exploitation, or market imperfections that harm the public. Ibn Taymiyyah also emphasized the importance of reasonable profits, the use of money as a medium of exchange and a measure of value, the control of money creation to prevent inflation, and market supervision through the hisbah institution. His thought reflects a balance between market freedom, moral responsibility, and the government's role in realizing justice and economic well-being.
