Abstract

Abstract: The demands of modernity, without neglecting the uniqueness and distinctiveness of pesantren are one of the advantages of pesantren. Pesantren is able to survive compared to other Islamic educational institutions in Nusantra. The ideal pesantren is one that is able to dialogue with modernity, without eliminating its main task as carrying out a moral mandate. Thus, pesantren are able to compete in the midst of the challenges of modernity without having to be uprooted from their own cultural roots. This article is qualitative research and is classified as library research. This study collected data and reviewed journal articles, literature, literature related to Islamic and modern pesantren. The result of this study is that the current pesantren renewal leads to the implementation of an integrative curriculum between religious science and general science to empower the pesantren community. Pesantren not only carry out religious functions, but also create workshops of skills (life skills) needed by the community. Religious education remains a top priority in shaping the character of students, while general education is only a provision in the midst of modernization that occurs. Harmonization between salaf and modern pesantren education models will produce various kinds of pesantren typology models, such as semi-developing Islamic boarding schools, developing Islamic boarding schools, Khalaf Islamic boarding schools.
