Abstract
Marriage in society is not only based on religious and state laws but is also influenced by long-standing customary traditions. One unique wedding tradition in the community of Negeri Kailolo, Pulau Haruku District, is the Barekeng, a solidarity-based mutual cooperation system where community members voluntarily provide financial support to the groom's family. This study aims to analyze the Barekeng tradition from the perspective of ‘Urf to assess its conformity with Islamic law. This research employs a qualitative method with an empirical approach through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that the Barekeng custom falls under the category of ‘Urf Shahih as it aligns with Islamic principles, does not contradict religious law, and provides significant social benefits. Beyond being an expression of social concern, Barekeng strengthens kinship bonds and reinforces the values of mutual cooperation. Therefore, this tradition holds high social relevance and can serve as a model for supporting marriage sustainability in other communities.
