STRATEGI PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA ARAB DI LINGKUNGAN PESANTREN SALAF–MODERN

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to describe Arabic language learning strategies in salaf-modern pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), analyze the integration of salaf and modern approaches, and identify supporting and inhibiting factors in their implementation. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design at Pondok Mamba'us Sholihin, Suci–Manyar, Gresik. Participants consisted of 21 individuals (6 teachers, 12 students, 3 administrators) selected through purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, passive participant observation over 8 weeks, and document analysis. Data were analyzed using interactive model thematic analysis with source and method triangulation. The findings reveal three main results. First, the pesantren implements a multidimensional learning strategy that integrates formal classroom learning (combining qaw?'id-tarjamah method for nahwu-sharaf and tariqah mub?syarah for muh?da?ah) with structured bi'ah lughawiyah (language environment) programs. Second, salaf-modern integration is achieved through pedagogical glocalization manifested in a balanced curriculum between qaw?'id (grammar) and muh?da?ah (conversation), as well as adaptation of Communicative Language Teaching principles that integrate Islamic content. Third, strategy implementation is influenced by supporting factors (visionary leadership, competent human resources, pesantren culture, high student motivation) and inhibiting factors (facility limitations, student heterogeneity, language inconsistency, heavy learning load). The study concludes that Pondok Mamba'us Sholihin has successfully developed an integrative and contextual Arabic language learning strategy model that can serve as a reference for other salaf-modern pesantren.
